And then there is the hunger of the sky. Looming massive over the burning pyramid, woven from smoke and ember, is the colossal visage of the Jaguar God. Its eyes burn with a piercing, unnatural red light, watching the destruction of its own altars. It does not intervene for the armored men, nor does it shield the native sons. It is a primal, judging force, indifferent to the clash of steel and stone, demanding only that the earth be fed. The invaders are merely the weapon; the true terror is the realization that the gods are watching them die.

The smoke parts violently as a torrential rain begins to fall, instantly extinguishing the burning temples. Kaan, Balam, and Ixchel stand battered amidst the ruined courtyard. The spectral god is gone. Beside Ixchel, the real jaguar sits calmly in the rain… licking the blood from its paw. The empire is gone, but the wild has reclaimed its throne.
